An experiment was conducted to synthesize a new C60 amphiphile in order to obtain stable monolayers. Two factors were considered in the molecular design. First, because C60 is extremely hydrophobic and easy to aggregate, a bulky and strongly hydrophilic group is desirable to anchor C60 at the interface. Second, since C60 has no distinct physical properties to help analyze molecular orientations, a functional group to probe aggregation sites is preferable. Based on these considerations, C60 derivative was synthesized.
