Large magnetocaloric effect of Mn3-xCoxGaC

The magnetocaloric effect of Mn3-xCoxGaC has been investigated. Mn3GaC shows a first-order antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic transition at Tt = 160 K. Large magnetocaloric effects of ΔSmag = 15 J/kgK, and ΔTad = 5.4 K were observed at the transition in an applied field of 2 T. The substitution of Co for Mn lowers Tt without significant loss of magnetocaloric effects. It was indicated that the system could cover a wide temperature range of 50-160 K by combining the compounds with various compositions from x = 0 to 0.05.
