Abstract
The large electro-optical Kerr effect in nanostructured chiral liquid-crystal composites was studied over a wide temperature range. Two kinds of composites (A and B) composed on polymer networks and achiral or chiral liquid crystals were used for the measurements. It was observed that as the temperature decreases, composite A shows a rapid decrease in the transmittance and an increase in the extinction ratio. The results reveal that the apparent isotropic state of composite B could be induced through incorporative effects of the polymer network and the chirality of the liquid crystals.
