Abstract

In order to investigate the effect of fundamental lignin structures on the cleavage of β-aryl ether linkages during alkaline pulping, softwood and hardwood lignin model compounds were synthesized and treated under soda and kraft pulping conditions. The cleavage of β-aryl ether linkages was analysed kinetically and the comparison of the reaction of softwood lignin and hardwood lignin was discussed.
