Abstract
Internal friction measurements were carried out for the ζ2′ (trigonal) martensite in a Au-49.5at%Cd alloy, which exhibits the pronounced martensite ageing effect such as the appearance of the rubber-like behavior. A few types of the internal friction peaks were found for the ζ2′ martensite for the first time, i.e. a sharp λ-type peak around 300 K associated with the β2→ζ2′ martensitic transformation, a broad peak around 200 K which is thought to be due to the twin boundaries motion of the martensite variants, and two small peaks in the martensitic state around 260 K and 280 K which showed a characteristic feature as the relaxation type peak. The internal friction of the ζ2′ martensite was observed to decrease with ageing, which is possibly due to a fact that the twin boundaries of the martensite variants become less mobile with ageing.
