Abstract
We investigated the effects of pentobarbital on the intracellular Ca2+concentration ([Ca2+]i) of the presynaptic nerve terminals (boutons). In the presence of external Ca2+, glutamate increased [Ca2+]i both in the neurons and in the presynaptic terminals. Pentobarbital suppressed the increase in neurons and in boutons with greater effects on the boutons. Our results indicated that pentobarbital may modulate the neurotransmission by inhibiting the transmitter release, which is induced by glutamate.
