Abstract

An experimental approach to an understanding system for natural language and pictorial patterns. The system is titled ISOBAR (an Information understanding System Of BAsic weather Report). It can accept both linguistic and pictorial inputs. Output can be linguistic, pictorial, or both depending upon command. Of interest is the semantic processing of the input. ISOBAR's world is limited to the weather reports of Japan and Far East Asian areas with associated weather charts, so the semantic background of the system is very narrow, and is quite specific. ISOBAR operates in two modes; either accumulating or retrieving meteorological information.
