Abstract
A nondimensional equation about the average heat transfer coefficient is derived from a hot-wire calibration in which the wire and the air temperatures are varied independently of each other and a correction for the heat conduction to the wire supports is made. The procedures for calculating the gas velocities and temperatures in engine cylinders are also shown using the nondimensional equation obtained, and the heat-balance equations for a constant-temperature hot-wire and for a resistance-wire which is a fine wire operated by a very small electric current in order to follow mainly a change in the gas temperature.
