Two carbon black-filled ethylene-piopylene-diene-methylene linkage (EPDM) mbbeis which have a different particle size were exposed to hydrogen gas; then, the critical pressures at the initiation of internal cracks (PF) were evaluated. It was obtained thatpF=4-5 MPa for two CB-filled rubbem by optical microscope observation. ThePF values were estimated in tenm of fracture mechanics under the assumption that bubbles were formed in the rubber structure afier decompression, and these giew with the elapsed time; consequently, cracks initiated from the stiess concentration of the bubbles. When an internal pressure of the bubble (11) was assumed to be equal to the applied hydrogen pressure (P), the PF values were successifilly estimated in terms of the critical internal pressure (11 F), since "F showed good coincience wfthpF for unfilled and silica-filled rubbeis. In contrast, pF of the CB-filled rubbem was overestimated by this method, bause '1F was lager thanpF. Since the CB-filled rubbeis contain cathon black as filler, much hydrogen is absoibed in the rubbeis compared wfth the unfilled and silica-filled rubbeis. Because the increase of originated from the absorbed hydiogen by CB was underestimated, ft was inferred that PF showed smaller than '11 F Therefore, ft was supposed that 11>p for the CB-filled rubbeis, i.e., the CB-filled rubbem experienced more piessurization due to addftional hydiogen.
