Abstract
The melting mode of Mg2SiO4 in a modified spinel phase is studied experimentally at a pressure of 20 GPa. Mg2SiO4 is proved to melt incongruently into periclase, MgO, and Si-rich liquid, though an incongruent melting involving phase B, Mg23Si8O42H6, intervenes at the transitional temperatures under hydrous conditions.
