Abstract
The magnetite-attaching method that can be used with single-walled carbon nanohorns (SWNH) and allows in vivo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of various carbon nanotubes (CNT) to provide information needed for biomedical applications and assessing their toxicity, was investigated. The attached magnetite nanoparticles induced darkening of the MR images allowing in vivo visualization of the accumulative behavior of nanohorns (NHs) in the spleen and kidneys. The method is expected to facilitate health-risk assessment of various types of CNTs using in vivo MRI for fullerene derivatives. The information provided in the experiment is important for the fabrication of nanotubular carbonaceous materials that are designed for applications in biomedical science and biotechnologies.
