Abstract

A new method is proposed for in-process detection of torque working on a drill. In this method, torque can be directly detected from a drill itself, which, in principle, allows quick dynamic response. Static experiments were carried out to investigate fundamental characteristics. The possibility of in-process detection of torque on a drill was demonstrated in dynamic experiments. Prototype sensors of solenoidal design showed promising results.
