Abstract

A new type of single compression machine has been developed to investigate basic aspects of the diesel combustion phenomenon. By the use of this single compression machine and a high pressure accumulated fuel injection system which is controlled electrically, combustion tests and photographic observations are carried out. From the series of tests, the influences of the surrounding air pressure, the temperature, the fuel injection pressure, and the swirl flow on the ignition delay are shown.
