Abstract
Hierarchical structures of bacterium body (Acetobactor xylinum) and microbial cellulose were quantitatively determined by focusing ultra-small angle neutron scattering (USANS) technique, which has been established by Japan Atomic Energy Agency at Tokai. By using a focusing neutron lens, we are able to cover a wide length scale from nano meter to micro meter. USANS (q<0.001 A-1, where q is wave number) from acetobactor xylinum was well-reproduced by a form factor of random-oriented cylindrical structure (radius and length are 1 and 10 μm, respectively), whereas SANS (0.001<q<0.1) starts to deviate from cylinder due to hierarchical structures inside Acetobactor xylinum. USANS from bacterium cellulose is also discussed in this paper.
