Abstract

Estrogens, androgens, and progestogens are a class of chemicals that includes steroid hormones naturally produced in the ovary and testis in vertebrates. These are called sex hormones and influence the development of genital organs (estrogen and androgen), the maintenance of pregnancy (progestogens), ovulation (estrogens), spermatogenesis (androgens), and the sexual differentiation of the brain (estrogen and androgen). The actions of these hormones are mediated through the estrogen receptor (ER), androgen receptor (AR), and progesterone receptor (PR). These receptors belong to the superfamily of nuclear receptors, a diverse group of transcriptional regulators. Teleosts have three subtypes of ER and two subtypes of AR because of gene duplication.
