The digital transformation in the Japanese automotive industry has accelerated in recent years. Based on case studies, the article shows that IoT and AI have gained in importance, smart factory concepts are now widespread and many companies have set up DX departments. The dynamics are based on a path of digital transformation closely linked to Japanese management principles, which differs in several respects from the expert-driven digitalization widespread in Germany.
