Abstract

The possibility of automatically controlling the band-saw blade deviation within the allowable limits during sawing by using a fuzzy control system was investigated. That is, the effects of parameters of the fuzzy control, which were the difference of the saw deviation (Δe) and the difference of the feed-rate (Δev), were studied in the control process, and the parameters were decided upon, and then the effectiveness of the fuzzy control system was investigated for sawing and board conditions. The results obtained were as follows: 1) The fuzzy control system adjusted the feed-rate automatically so as to operate within the allowable limits of the blade deviation for decreases in the saw velocity and the tensile stress of the saw blade which leads to an increase of the blade deviation. 2) The fuzzy control system automatically adjusted the feed-rate so as to operate within the allowable limits of the blade deviation which was set up. The fuzzy control system is advantageous in setting the saw-guide. 3) The fuzzy control system automatically adjusted the feed-rate so as to operate within the allowable limits of the blade deviation for the angle between the workpiece feed direction and the grain direction, the workpiece species, moisture content, and depth. 4) The fuzzy control system automatically adjusted the feed-rate so as to operate within the allowable limits of the blade deviation for the abnormal blade deviation generated rapidly because of sawing a knot or other defect in the workpiece.
