Abstract

Biliary atresia (BA) is one of the most stimulating and exciting pathological conditions for pediatric surgeons, pediatric physicians, and transplant surgeons. We, pediatric surgeons, have been covering almost all aspects of BA, including diagnosis, Kasai operation (KO), postoperative medical management, re-operation, long-term follow-up, liver transplantation (LT) (pre- and postoperational management, operative procedure), and transition to adult. From our experiences in Japan as well as in developing countries, we may propose the following issues as future prospect. (1) Screening and Early diagnosis in Developing countries, (2) Optimal timing of KO, (3) Primary LT, (4) Oral Care for BA patients, (5) Regenerative Medicine. BA will provide us lots of interesting aspects now and in the future and will contribute further development of medicine. Communication, Collaboration, and Cooperation (3C) in multidisciplinary team are important for further advance of BA.
