    Abstract

The effective conversion of wave energy into potential energy has been investigated through laboratory experiments. In the conversion system, the structure which has a slope in front is used to activate wave overtopping and to gain much head difference. Wave overtopping is generated by progressing two-dimensional regular waves to models of the structure. The gradient of the slope, the wave parameters and the crown height have been varied over a wide range. The relations between the dimensionless wave overtopping rate and the slope have been obtained with the aid of a dimensional analysis. They are normalized by using dimensionless representative quantities, which are related to the dimensionless crown height and the wave steepness. The wave overtopping rate can be estimated by using the obtained dimensionless empirical diagrams.
