Abstract

The structure and superconductivity of La1.875-xNdxBa0.125CuO4 (0≤x≤0.20) and La1.875-xSmxBa0.125CuO4 (0≤x≤0.10) have been studied by X-ray diffraction and magnetic susceptibility over a temperature range down to 10 K. Superconductivity does not recover by Nd doping up to x=0.20 and Sm doping up to x=0.10. X-ray diffraction revealed that new structural transitions appear at low temperature. La1.835Nd0.04Ba0.125CuO4 undergoes the discontinuous orthorhombic (MTO) - > tetragonal (LTT1) transition at about 65 K, the LTT1 - > orthorhombic (LTO) transition at about 50 K, and then the continuous LTO - > tetragonal (LTT2) transition at about 30 K. In the case of La1.875-xNdxBa0.125CuO4 (0.06≤x≤0.20) and La1.875-xSmxBa0.125CuO4 (0<x≤0.10), the lowest-temperature phase is LTO.
