Evaluation of tribo-coatings in hydrogen atmosphere

    The effects of atmosphere and temperature on tribo-coatings were studied. The diamond-like carbon (DLC) coatings showed superior friction characteristics under room temperature and 220 K in the hydrogen gas. For the TiN coating, the friction coefficients and the uncoated bearing steel were much higher than those of the DLC coatings in the hydrogen gas. The friction coefficients of the CVD-DLC were lower and more stable compared with those of the bearing steel under both temperature conditions.
