Abstract

Phase behavior of poly(4-trimethylsilylstyrene) (PTMSS) / polyisoprene (PI) and poly(4-tert/-butylstyrene) (P/BS) / PI blends was investigated by optical microscopy and dynamic viscoelasticity. Number-average molecular weights of PTMSS, PtBS and PI were 8.5 × 103, 1.1 × 104 and 6.5 × 103, respectively. PTMSS / PI and PtBS / PI blends were homogeneous and looked transparent in a temperature range from room temperature to 240 °C, suggesting that these blends are miscible. Temperature dependence of dynamic loss tangent, tanδ in these blends exhibits single peaks and its peak top temperature Tmax monotonically increases with increasing PTMSS or PtBS fraction. This result indicates that miscibility of PtBS with PI is similar to that of PTMSS with PI.
