Enzymatic hydrolysis of castor oil for valuable fatty acid production

Pseudomonas aeruginosa, fluorescens, putida, and stutteri showed an ability for hydrolysis of castor oil among 160 strains of Pseudomonas sp. isolated from factory wastes in Kitakyushu City. All 39 strains of P. aeruginosa tested were, in particular, found to produce castor oil-hydrolyzing lipases in the culture broth. Finally, 11 strains with greater lipase activities, which included 6 strains isolated from the soil and water samples in a factory operating with a large amount of castor oil, were selected in order to investigate the productivity and characteristics of the lipases. Maximum activity for the hydrolysis of castor oil was obtained from 2 strains after 4-5 days inoculation. Detailed studies on the hydrolysis of castor oil suggested the presence of two types of lipases, region-specific and non-region-specific for the oil.
