Abstract

The results of a basic experimental study on the electrochemical reaction and the electrode potential of the metal-hydride are given with emphasis on the thermodynamic considerations. The electrochemical reaction of the metal-hydride in alkaline aqueous solution was investigated by measuring the electrode potential and its temperature dependence. The process of the hydrogenation of the electrode metal is involved in the electrochemical step. The relation which connects the potential in electrochemical system and the equilibrium pressure in gas phase was derived from the thermodynamic consideration and was proved experimentally. The capacity of hydrogen in the electrode was discussed in connection with the heat of formation of the alloy electrode.
