N2 - The effect of water droplet size on emulsified biodiesel combustion is investigated using a DI diesel engine. When the Sauter mean diameter of water droplet in emulsified biodiesel with 15 wt% water content and without adding emulsifier changes 30 to 170 μm, the ignition delay and exhaust emissions are almost same. Moreover, to clarify the effect of content of crude glycerin used as an emulsifier on emulsified biodiesel combustion, biodiesel with 3 wt% crude glycerin also is investigated. Biodiesel with 8 wt% crude glycerin has longer ignition delay and higher NOx, CO, HC and Smoke emissions compared with biodiesel. Based on the results, it is considered that with increase in content of crude glycerin as an emulsifier, although emulsified biodiesel has smaller water droplet size and higher viscosity, the combustion deterioration is caused by crude glycerin itself rather than by different size of water droplet in emulsified biodiesel.
