Effects of deuterium ion irradiation on gas emission and sublimation of graphite by pulse high heat load

Abstract

Gas emission and sublimation of graphite, which was irradiated by deuterium ions, has been measured under irradiation with pulsed laser beams to examine the effect of deuterium irradiation on the properties. Surface temperature for deuterium ion irradiated graphite during the heat load was 150-200 K higher than that of the unirradiated specimen. A large amount of deuterium gas was desorbed and considerable degradation of vacuum occurred under even a low pulse heat load such as a heat flux of 30 MW/m2 and a duration time of 1 ms. Emission of hydrogen clusters, carbon atoms and particles increased with increasing heat flux. A deuterium affected area with a thickness of 100 nm was eroded by a pulse heat load of 500-600 MW/m2 for 1 ms.
