Abstract

The effective thermal conductivities of packed beds with an apparent density 850 kg/m**3, containing one of 11 varieties of coal or a binary mixture thereof, were measured over a range of temperatures from 300 to 1,200 K for continuous heating at a rate of 0. 05 K/s, using an improved hot-wire method of the authors. Reproducible results were obtained. The effective thermal conductivities of all but three of the coals could be correlated with the mean vitrinite reflectance. The correlations are also valid for binary mixtures of eight types of coal.
