N2 - The effect of silicon on the age softening was investigated in eutectoid carbon steel wires. It is demonstrated that silicon suppresses the decrease of strength occurring at aging temperatures above 400 °C. The effect of silicon on the age softening can be explained by the decrease in the rate of break-up and spheroidization of lamellar cementite. This is probably because the break-up and spheroidization of cementite is controlled by the diffusion of silicon atoms at the cementite-ferrite interface which increase with increasing silicon content in the bulk.
