Effect of gap size on the fatigue performance of non-load-carrying fillet welded joint

Abstract

In the present study, the fatigue performance of the welded joint made by CO2 gas shielded welding with different gap sizes is investigated to obtain one of the supporting materials to modify the construction quality standards. Allowable limits on the gap size of welded joints is specified in many construction quality standards based on experimental and empirical results from the welded joints made by manual metal arc welding. The fatigue test results for the welded specimen with gap presents higher performance compared to the fatigue design S-N curves proposed by the International Institute of Welding (IIW).
