Abstract
Toughness was highest when C was between 0. 01 and 0. 02%. Strength was not lowered significantly when the C content was less than 0. 02%. The strength of Nb-free steel decreased with a decrease in C content. The toughness of weld bond of Nb steel was highest when C was between 0. 01 and 0. 02%. In a Nb-free steel, a C content below 0. 04% did not improve toughness.
