Early vitrectomy for rupture of globe in two pseudophakic eyes

We performed wound closure and early vitrectomy for rupture of globe in two eyes. One case was a 63-year-old female. She had received phacoemulsification-aspiration (PEA) and intraocular lens (IOL) implantation 7 years 10 months before. The other was a 77-year-old female. She had received vitrectomy, PEA and IOL implantation for idiopathic macular hole 4 years 5 months before. In both cases, the globe had ruptured at the previous site of IOL implantation. The first case had hemorrhage in the anterior chamber and the vitreous. The second had total retinal detachment. The postoperative course was uneventful. The corrected visual acuity improved from light perception to 0.9 in the first case and from 0 to 0.04 in the second. While the visual prognosis may be poor in eyes of globe rupture, these two cases illustrate that early vitrectomy may be beneficial in maintaining the eye and in restoring visual acuity.
