Differential antitumor immunity caused by cytokine immunogene therapy

We investigated the effects of immunogene therapy using cytokines (GM- CSF, MCP-1, IFN-γ) that activate macrophages. IFN-γ completely inhibited the growth of mouse malignant melanoma, colon cancer, and renal cancer cells in a tumorigenicity study. On the other hand, MCP-1 showed a tendency to enhance tumor growth. GM-CSF significantly inhibited tumor growth in a tumor vaccination study. Our results demonstrated the different effects of cytokines on tumor growth. It is important to understand the mechanism by which a cytokine exerts its antitumor effects.
