Abstract
In Japan, Typhoons, strong lightning strikes and mountainous terrains prevent introducing economically advantageous larger turbines. Over 90% of wind turbines installed in Japan are imported from Europe and designed adaptive to European environments. Because of the differences of environmental condition between Japan and Europe, many troubles are reported. Fuji Heavy Industries LTD has developed a new 2 MW wind turbine "SUBARU 80/2.0" in 2005 to resolve these problems. The configuration of "SUBARU 80/2.0" is downwind machine that can adapt to Japanese circumstances. This paper explains Japanese particular environments and the background of development.
