Abstract

The preparation of bamboo tar resin through a chemical modification of bamboo tar for its use as a new carbon precursor for carbon materials was discussed. The compositional and structural properties of bamboo tar were analyzed by the help of H-NMR, FT-IR, GC-MS, TOF-mass spectrometry and TPD. It was found that the FT-IR spectrum of bamboo tar exhibited a lot of oxygen-containing functional groups specially -OH groups in bamboo tar. The analysis of the molecular composition of bamboo tar revealed that it contained phenol-group species. The results show that the modification of bamboo tar improved its carbonization yield to 32% and the resin was expected to be a useful precursor for carbon materials.
