Determination of sulfide, thiosulfate and polysulfides in biological materials for diagnosis of sulfide poisoning

Abstract

Hydrogen sulfide poisoning is frequently encountered in the practice of forensic science. Hydrogen sulfide is unstable and is rapidly metabolized in the human body. There are also problems such as postmortem production of sulfide due to putrefaction of blood and tissues. The literature on the analysis of sulfide, thiosulfate and polysulfides in the biological materials is reviewed. This review includes sample preparation procedure, analytical methods for sulfide, thiosulfate and polysulfides, samples and target compounds to be analysed for diagnosis of sulfide poisoning. Case reports of hydrogen sulfide poisoning and the levels of sulfide, thiosulfate and polysulfides in each case were also described.
