Abstract
Benzoic acid was effectively degraded to CO2 and H2O by brown-rot basidiomycetes, Tyromyces palustris and Gloeophyllum trabeum. The metabolic pathway for ring-opening reaction was investigated using carboxybiphenyls as a substrate. Reduction, methylation, and decarboxylation reactions simultaneously occurred to form a series of initial intermediates. The main reaction for the initial step is different for each substrate, suggesting that each step involves specific catalysts.
