N2 - Auger electron spectroscopy was used to study decomposition of the surface nickel-carbide, p4g(2 × 2)C Ni(001), induced by copper adsorption. Decomposition temperature of the surface nickel-carbide covered by a copper monolayer was decreased by 150-200 K compared to that of the surface nickel-carbide without copper. On cooling, the released carbon atoms did not come back to the surface region anymore. Behavior of carbon is discussed based on the stability of surface metal-carbides.
