Cylindrical Aerial LED Display

Abstract

A prototype of cylindrical aerial LED display was developed using commercially available LED strips. Each LED is equipped with a driving IC that enables brightness-control by digital signals. The digital signal is sent sequentially to the next chip by a shift register, and the LEDs emit light all at once by the resetting signal. The response speed of the LED was limited by this signal transmission speed, so that we have succeeded in improving the response speed and the resolution in the rotational direction by using multiple LED strips in a two-dimensional arrangement and transmitting signals in parallel, as well as improving the resolution in the signal transmission direction by placing each strip in a different position.
