Abstract

The critical behavior of the nonlinear permittivity εn in the Sm-A phase of chiral liquid crystals was studied experimentally and theoretically by using the phenomenological mean-field force energy. First, the nonlinear permittivity in the Sm-A of ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs) was calculated by using the mean-field free energy near the Sm-A-Sm-C%z.ast; phase transition. Second, the critical behavior of εn for antiferroelectric liquid crystals (AFLCs) was characterized. In the case of ferroelectric liquid crystals (FLCs), it was found that the critical behaviors of these systems can be described successfully. For the AFALCs, the large fluctuation of tilt order parameter in the Sm-A phase was reflected.
