Abstract

We report a novel microfluidic approach for continuous generation of cell-laden microgels using a deterministic lateral displacement (DLD) array that enable on-chip separation, reaction and extraction of microgels from the oil into aqueous phase continuously. Spherical cell-laden Ca-alginate microgel particles dispersed in aqueous phase without satellite droplets were obtained by transporting Na-alginate main droplets across the streams of the CaCl2 emulsion and glycerol aqueous solution through the DLD pillar arrays.
