Abstract

Minimizing rockfall risk involves both structural and nonstructural preventive measures i.e. structural protection, land planning and or evacuation management. It needs detail information about rockfall characteristics. The rockfall characteristics includes potential trajectory along the escarpment, source of rockfall, velocity, impact force, final deposition and potential element at risk. Combination of GIS and DDA is employed to calculate the rockfall characteristics in Gunung Kelir, Yogyakarta Indonesia. GIS is powerful to calculate the potential trajectory of boulder, final deposition of boulder and to show the potential element at risk along the escarpment. Whereas 2D DDA model is powerful to calculate dynamic behavior of single rockfall. Thus, the result shows that the combination of GIS and DDA is essential for practical preliminary risk assessment.
