Spectrochemical properties of LnI2 (Ln = Sm, Eu, Yb) prepared with lanthanoid metal and diiodoethane in THF were characterized by means of UV-Vis, fluorescence and ESR spectroscopy. A comparative investigation has also been made concerning LnI3 (Ln= LaLu) and the Grignard-type compounds RLnI (R = Et, Ph; Ln = Eu, Yb). LnI2 (Ln = Sm, Eu, Yb) was also prepared from reaction of lanthanoid metal and iodine in THF.
