Abstract
Many Japanese companies have changed the name of their patent division to 'Intellectual Property Division'. A functional transition of 'Intellectual Property Division' and background factors for such changes are analyzed. The case studies of Japanese companies are presented. Japanese companies have recognized the importance of intellectual property rights as strategic resources. They are utilizing the rights to maintain their competitive advantages.
