Calculation of nitrogen absorption into austenitic stainless steel plate and wire

    The behavior of nitrogen absorption into plate and wire was analyzed for an austenitic steel. The boundary condition on nitrogen concentration at specimen surface was given by the equilibrium nitrogen concentration as a function of the chemical composition of the steel. The treatment temperature of 1473 K was selected by considering the sufficient amount of diffusivity, the wide solubility of nitrogen, and the practical viewpoint. Hardness of the obtained materials was measured with a micro-Vickers hardness testing machine at a load of 0.98 N.
