Ball-milling of Mg2Ni under hydrogen

The intermetallic compound Mg2Ni is milled under hydrogen in a high-energy planetary mill. The resulting material is a mixture of heavily deformed Mg2Ni, low-temperature Mg2NiH4, and, possibly, high-temperature Mg2NiH4 structures. The relative amount of each phase depends on the initial hydrogen pressure in the milling vial.
