Bactericidal effect of atmospheric gas plasma on Escherichia coli K12

The effect of atmospheric gas plasmas (AGP) on the inactivation of Eschrichia coli was investigated. The initial and surviving cell counts were determined by plating 0.1 mL of diluted samples on triplicate plates of nutrient agar. The reactive chemical species responsible for the inactivation of bacteria were produced by chemical reaction between water molecules and plasma electrons in the plasma unit. The results suggested that the ions produced during the AGP treatments had a bactericidal effect.
