Abstract
One surface of a very thin poly(maleic anhydride-alt-1-octadecene)(PMAO) film was treated with an SHG-active dye (Disperse Orange3:DO3) on water. The DO3-treated PMAO film showed a clear second harmonic generation (SHG) response. It is suggested that the asymmetric incorporation is achieved by taking the form of -CO2-N+H3-between the amino group of DO3 and the carboxyl group of PMAO formed by hydrolysis of maleic anhydride moiety. The results were compared with those in poly(methyl methacrylate) and poly(vinyl chloride) films having less and no SHG responses, respectively.
