Abstract

An ultrasonic spectroscopic measuring system for higher temperature use was constructed by utilizing PVDF transducers and polyimide buffers. The system was successfully applied to simultaneous observation of the changes in ultrasonic velocity and absorption in a wide frequency range upon the ferroelectric phase transition of a VDF/TrFE copolymer (54 VDF mol%). The results revealed that the absorption becomes the highest and the velocity shows a sharp bend around the transition temperature of about 66°C. Further, frequency dispersion was observed for the degree of absorption and the temperature change in velocities.
