    Abstract

A 'running-in equation' is offered which describes the change in surface microtopography due to wear. It relates the height distribution of a composite profile of wearing surfaces to the size distribution of the wear particles. Solutions of the equation are obtained by successive computation, which is conducted on the basis of a lubricated wear experiment. The results agree reasonably well with the experiment when the effect of plastic deformation is insignificant. It is also suggested that, after a prolonged sliding duration, a steady-state roughness is formed which corresponds to the particle size distribution.
