Abstract

An experimental study was performed on combustion of leanand stoichiometric-premixed spays in counter flow. N-decane was used as a liquid fuel with low volatility. In stoichiometricpremixed spray combustion, both blue flame and yellow flame were established near the stagnation region. As the mean droplet diameter was increased, the yellow-luminous region decreased and blue streaks appeared behind the yellow luminous region. In lean-premixed spray combustion, two distinct layers of blue flame and yellow flame were no longer observed. The blue region consisted of a number of blue streaks. The flame could be stabilized within a specific range of the mean droplet diameter. Flame structure and stabilization are discussed based on the flame-spread mechanism of droplet array with a low-volatility fuel.
